How does a plc control a 3 phase motor?

i want to know how exactly is a 3 phase motor connected to a plc. i understand that the plc makes the motor run through the designated software and ladder logic programme that is written for it but my question is that how is the motor actually wired to the plc. is the plc wired to the NO contacts of a 3 phase contactor and when a start or stop is pressed that's how the motor is controlled or is it something else?
