If someone was vaccinated for Small Pox when young, and had no reaction, or scar, were they immune from birth?

A lot of European or those descended from them are immune to smallpox. This how Europeans conquered the world.When europeans came to America they brought smallpox which devastated the local people but the majority of the Europeans were immune or were partly immune and could fight it off.
